Free Agency & FAAB

Each team is allocated $100 in Free Agent Acquisition Budget (FAAB) to place bids on players throughout the regular season. FAAB is replenished at the start of every season in the amount of $100.

Free Agents in the SBHL are divided into restricted free agents (RFA), who were signed to a team during the regular season, and unrestricted free agents (UFA), who are not signed to any team. Every year before the SBHL Rookie Draft, teams can bid on all free agents (RFA & UFA) in designated weeks called Free Agency Periods (FAPs).

Free Agency Period (FAP)

Each team may use their current FAAB budget to place bids on available players during Free Agency Period. Each team will blindly bid on a player by emailing their respective bid, in the accepted format, to the Free Agency SBHL email address. The highest bidder will win rights to that player, and that player will be added to that Owner's permanent roster.

There will be a maximum of 10 available players in any FAP, and a FAP will last approx. 6 calendar days.

Process

The process for each FAP consists of 3 general phases, the Eligibility Phase, where owners nominate which Free Agents are eligible to bid on, the Blind Bid Phase, where every owner emails their bid for each player to an independently monitored League email, and the Signing Phase, where the bids are consolidated and the winning bidder signs the eligible Free Agent.

Eligibility Phase

Each owner has 2 days to respond to a league SurveyMonkey and writes-in players they vote to be eligible for the current FAP. Any number of players can be nominated for eligibility. If more than 10 different players are collectively nominated, the top ten players (the players with the most nominations) will be eligible for bid. If more than 10 players are nominated and there is a tie for eligible free agents, the tie-breaker will be by Free Agent's last name.

Blind Bid Phase

Every Owner that wants to make an offer on a player, will do so during the Blind Bid Phase. Owners send their bids to the league email, which is monitored by a 3rd party moderator. The commissioner will not have access to this email for the entirety of the Free Agency Process. The priority in which players will be made bids on, will be set in the email.

Signing Phase

If the player is Unrestricted Free Agent the winning bid must be greater than the 2nd highest bid by a minimum of 10%. If the winning bid does not exceed 10%, the Free Agent Player carries on to the next FAP. If there is no winning Owner by the end of the final FAP, the player goes to the highest bid placed.

If a player is a Restricted Free Agent, the Owner with the First Rights to that player may match the highest bid. If the Owner with First Rights chooses not to match the highest bid, the Owner with the First Rights receives a compensatory pick to be added to the end of the corresponding Rookie Draft Round.

Any owner can only receive 3 compensatory picks in this manner. Compensatory picks can only be added to the end of the 2nd round and beyond. Compensatory picks are calculated based on a formula using the average ADP for Half-Point-PPR format according to FantasyPros.com.
